Bonsai, pronounced as "bone sigh," translates directly to "potted tree" and has its roots in China (penjing = Tray scenery) around 2000 years ago before making its way to Japan. This captivating art form gained popularity during the Edo period, spanning from 1603 to 1867.
The essence of Bonsai lies in cultivating and meticulously shaping tiny trees within containers, aiming to evoke the grandeur of ancient trees found in nature. Other Asian cultures also embrace similar practices, such as Korea's Bunjae (direct translation of Bonsai) and the intricate miniature landscapes known as Hòn non bộ (rockery) in Vietnam.
