Bonsai (pronounced bone sigh) literally translated to potted tree/plant, originated in China (penjing) about 2000 years ago and was later introduced to Japan. The art form became more widely enjoyed during the Edo period (1603–1867).
The art of Bonsai involves growing and shaping miniature trees in containers to create a realistic representation of an old tree in nature. Similar arts exist in other Asian cultures, including Korea's Bunjae and the miniature living landscapes of Vietnamese Hòn non bộ.
